Senior Ben Trachtenberg wins
prestigious Mitchell Scholarship

Yale College senior Ben Trachtenberg has become the first Yale student to win a prestigious George J. Mitchell Scholarship, which supports one year of study in Ireland or Northern Ireland.

Trachtenberg is one of only 12 individuals selected from 200 applicants nationwide for the scholarship. Named in honor of Senator George Mitchell's contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, the scholarship is awarded to individuals between the ages of 18 and 30 who have demonstrated intellectual distinction, leadership potential and commitment to community service.

Trachtenberg, a native of Washington, D.C., intends to pursue an M.A. in international relations at the University of Limerick. He is majoring in political science at Yale and has been active with the Yale Daily News, for which he formerly served as news editor. He also chaired the Yale College Student Union, a debating society which brings national figures to campus, and was the president of his college fraternity, Sigma Chi.

Trachtenberg also received a Humanity in Action Fellowship, which allowed him to do research in The Netherlands on the Holocaust and contemporary human rights issues. He has been an intern with both the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. He volunteered in the Yale Daily News Summer Journalism program providing writing and reporting instruction to New Haven area high school students.

The Mitchell Scholarships are endowed by the Irish government. Also contributing to the scholarships are an anonymous donor, the Northern Ireland Executive, Bombardier Aerospace, Cross Atlantic Capital Partners, Crucible and Mutual of America. Universities in Ireland and Northern Ireland waive tuition and provide housing to the scholars. The scholars' travel stipend is donated by Usit Now, Ireland's premier student travel service. Mitchell Scholars also receive a living expenses stipend.
