Two-day conference to explore ways to foster peaceful relations between India and Pakistan
Top South Asian scholars, government officials and activists will gather on Friday and Saturday, April 6 and 7, to discuss innovative approaches to fostering peace between India and Pakistan.
"Bordering on Peace: A Conference on India-Pakistan Relations" is organized by the International Conflict Research Group at Yale College (ICRG) and is sponsored by numerous Yale departments and centers, as well as the expatriate community of Indians and Pakistanis in the United States.
Official Indian and Pakistani government representatives will give the two keynote speeches. Other guests include Karl Inderfurth, former U.S. assistant secretary of state; Tanvir Ahmad Khan, former foreign secretary of Pakistan; Indian historian Rajmohan Gandhi; political scientist Sumit Ganguly; Shahid Javed Burki, former vice president of the World Bank; Pakistani businessman Rafique Saigol; Columbia professor emeritus Ainslie Embree; dancer and peace activist Sheema Kermani; and economist Rahul Tongia.
Divided into security, historical and economic panels, the discussion at the conference is geared towards deepening the participants understanding of the Indian-Pakistani relationship. The guests will also discuss ways to develop cooperation mechanisms between the two governments, whose conflict today presents a major threat not only to their national security but also to the international community at large, say conference organizers. At the end of the conference, a working group of Indian and Pakistani students from top Northeast universities will be established to further explore ways to better India-Pakistan relations.

ICRG consists of a group of Yale students dedicated to fostering awareness of international conflicts that, they feel, do not receive sufficient attention. Each year, ICRG organizes a conference on a different issue in which parties to a conflict are brought together to present their views as well as engage in constructive discussion. The advisory board of ICRG includes distinguished senior faculty from across Yale University departments and schools.
