Dermatology symposium pays tribute to Dr. Irwin Braverman
A daylong symposium in honor of Dr. Irwin Braverman will explore the latest advances in his field of dermatology on Saturday, April 28.
The event will start at 8 a.m. in the School of Medicine's Fitkin Amphitheatre, 15 York St.
The symposium will feature lectures from researchers at Yale, Harvard, Boston University, the State University of New York at Stonybrook, the University of North Carolina and the University of Colorado. Topics include "Integrins: The Pathfinders for Wound Repair," "UV Responses: Tying it all Together" and "The Skin and the Gut."
"Dr. Irwin Braverman is an outstanding clinician who has provided insight into a wide range of cutaneous diseases, from lupus to hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasias to cutaneous lymphoma," said organizing committee member Dr. Jean Bolognia, professor of dermatology and vice chair of clinical affairs. "His single-authored textbook titled 'Skin Signs of Systemic Disease' has been an invaluable resource for thousands of dermatologists and internists. This symposium is a celebration of his brilliant career."
In addition to being a renowned researcher on the aging of the skin and T cell lymphomas, Braverman is an innovative educator. With the help of Linda Friedlander, curator of education at the Yale Center for British Art, he developed a tutorial that used highly detailed original works of art to train dermatology students to become more careful observers. This tutorial, called the "British Museum Project," has since been used as a model for similar classes at medical schools around the country.
Braverman received his M.D. from Yale in 1955 and has worked at Yale since 1959. He became professor of dermatology in 1973. He is the recipient of the JN Taub Memorial International Award for Psoriasis, and was president of the Society of Investigative Dermatology. He also served as Litchfield Lecturer of Oxford University and as the Sulzberger International Lecturer for the American Academy of Dermatology.
Symposium sponsors include the New England Dermatological Society, the Department of Dermatology and the Association of Clinical Attendings in Dermatology at Yale; and corporate sponsors Dermik Laboratories, Inc. and Fugisawa Healthcare, Inc.
A reception will follow the symposium at 4 p.m. at the Yale Center for British Art, 1080 Chapel St., and a dinner/dance will be held at the Omni New Haven Hotel, 155 Temple St. Registration is required by Friday, April 13. To register, call Donna Carroll at (203) 785-4092.
