Conference will highlight the advances in treatments for sleep-related illnesses
Researchers from Yale will be among the individuals participating in the 15th annual meeting of the Northeastern Sleep Society on March 30-31 at the Omni New Haven Hotel, 155 Temple St.
The meeting, the largest sleep medicine conference in the country, will focus on the latest advances in treatments for sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy and insomnia. Other presentation topics include sleep loss as a risk factor for obesity, movement disorders and diabetes mellitus. In addition to Yale researchers, sleep specialists from the University of Chicago, University of Wisconsin, New York University and the University of Manitoba will participate.
"Conference attendees will come away with new ideas for treating sleep-related illnesses," says Dr. Vahid Mohsenin, professor of internal medicine and director of the Yale Center for Sleep Medicine. The center provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for sleep-related breathing disorders such as snoring and sleep apnea.
Mohsenin said there are many health consequences of sleep disorders. "Snorers, especially those who have loud habitual snoring, and patients with sleep apnea are particularly at risk for developing hypertension and other cardiovascular complications," he says.
The conference is aimed at health professionals in the areas of internal medicine, neurology, pulmonary medicine, otolaryngology, psychiatry and psychology. Attendees will receive 13 continuing medical education (CME) credit hours. Advance registration is required for those seeking CME credits.
