The Yale School of Medicine was granted a $200,000 Career Development Award by Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) to support eye research conducted by Dr. Ning Tian, assistant professor of ophthalmology at the School of Medicine. The support is provided over a period of four years. Dr. Bruce Shields, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, says that Tian's research focuses on how the cells in the retina are connected and how light-evoked signals across these connections are formed and modified in the developing retina. This basic understanding of retinal function is critical to determine the mechanisms of disease state and to find cures, adds Shields. Founded in 1960, RPB is the world's leading voluntary organization supporting eye research.
