Special postcard salutes Yale in its tercentennial year

The United States Postal Service and the United Nations Postal Administration have joined with those wishing Yale a "Happy 300th Birthday!"

In honor of the Tercentennial, the U.S. Postal Service will issue a postal card featuring Connecticut Hall, the oldest building on campus and in New Haven. A contemporary photograph of Connecticut Hall by Victoria Sambunaris ('99 M.F.A) appears on the postcard's printed stamp, which was designed by Derry Noyes of Washington, D.C. The front and back of the postcard are otherwise blank.

The United Nations Postal Administration, the postal service for the United Nations, developed a commemorative cancellation for use with a U.N. stamp added to the Connecticut Hall postcard. This cancellation features an image of Harkness Tower and the Tercentennial logo. The only other time the U.N. issued such a cancellation was in 1998 in honor of the 100th anniversary of Peking University.

The 20-cent stamped U.S. postal card -- number 51 in the Postal Service's "Historic Preservation" series -- and the U.N. commemorative cancellation will be formally dedicated in a ceremony in Connecticut Hall on Friday, March 30, at 11:30 am. The public is invited.

Among the officials on hand for the ceremony will be Yale President Richard C. Levin; Ambassador Joseph Verner Reed, under secretary-general of the U.N.; John F. Walsh, member of the board of governors of the U.S. Postal Service; C. Douglas Lewis, curator of sculpture and decorative arts at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and vice chair of the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee; New Haven Mayor John DeStefano, Jr.; and Yale Vice President and Secretary Linda K. Lorimer;

"The Postal Service is proud to honor one of our country's finest institutions of higher learning with the issuance of the Yale University stamped postal card," said U.S. Postal Service governor Walsh, who will dedicate the card at the Yale ceremony. "From before the founding of the United States, Yale University has seen many of its graduates become some of America's greatest leaders and scholars."

"Yale has long been a shining beacon in the academic community," said Ambassador Reed. "The United Nations is pleased to salute the University in its tercentennial year for being a place where the greatest minds of successive ages have gathered to trade ideas and train their successors."

Starting March 31, Yale's Connecticut Hall postal card will be available at U.S. post offices, postal stores and philatelic centers across the country.

Individuals can purchase the postcard bearing the U.S. Postal Service's "First Day Issue" cancellation by sending $0.22 for each card to New Haven Postmaster, 50 Brewery St., New Haven, CT, 06511.

The Connecticut Hall postcard bearing the U.N. cancellation will be available only through the United Nations Postal Administration by calling 1-800-234-UNPA.

A brick structure built by Francis Letort and Thomas Bills between 1750 and 1753, Connecticut Hall is the lone survivor of "Brick Row," a group of Georgian-style buildings constructed before 1820 and razed after the Civil War. Originally a dormitory, Connecticut Hall now houses faculty offices and meeting rooms. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Oct 15, 1966.
