Native Americans from throughout the United States and Canada demonstrated their artistry during the powwow at last year's event in the Payne Whitney Gym

Powwow celebrates Native American
dance, drumming and artistry

Native American dancers from throughout North America will show off their various styles of dancing and colorful costumes as they compete in contests during a day-long powwow on Saturday, April 14.

This is the third year that the annual event is being hosted by the Association of Native Americans at Yale College (ANAAY), a student-run group which aims to foster a supportive and active environment at Yale for Native American undergraduates. The powwow will take place 11 a.m.-11 p.m. at the Payne Whitney Gymnasium, 20 Tower Pkwy. Admission is free, but donations are
welcome.

The dancers will perform to the drumming of two drum groups, Silvercloud and the Mystic River Singers. The event will also feature Native American jewelry and crafts, which will be for sale at the event. Cooks at the event will supply an abundance of fried bread, a traditional powwow favorite.

The powwow is offered as a celebration of Native American song and dance and an opportunity to appreciate fine craftsmanship and artistry. In addition to hosting cultural events on campus, ANAAY also travels to other Native American gatherings in the region.

For information on participating in the dancing, call (203) 432-2931 or (203) 436-1743. Directions to the Payne Whitney Gymnasium are available by calling the Yale Visitor Center at (203) 432-2302. Further information can also be found at the ANAAY website at www.yale.edu/anaay/.
