Event will explore the impact of
globalization on health in Africa

The effects of globalization on health in Africa -- particularly as they are seen through the eyes of youth -- will be explored during the sixth annual International African Students Association (IASA) conference, which will be held on campus Friday-Sunday, April 13-15.

"Globalization and Health: Challenges for African Youth" is hosted by the African Students Associations at Yale, Brown and Southern Connecticut State universities. The event will explore such issues as the social, economic and political effects of HIV/AIDS, including the plight of children orphaned by parents who had the virus, and HIV/AIDS intervention programs for youth; emerging infectious diseases such as the Ebola virus; child mortality; interactions between formal and traditional medical systems; the role of foreign pharmaceutical companies in healthcare; and women's interactions with African health services, among others.

One aim of the conference is to facilitate discussion between students and professionals in academic, government, economics, health and the media, organizers say. The event includes a panel of guest speakers and individual workshops.

Panelists include Joanne Csete of Human Rights Watch; Kizito Nsarkaza of UNAIDS in Geneva, Switzerland; Kawango Agot of the University of Washington; freelance journalist Keith Snow; and Yale faculty members Dr. Gerald Friedland, director of the AIDS Program; Eric Worby, assistant professor of anthropology; and Dr. Robert Ryder, the John R. Paul Professor of Epidemiology, among others.

A banquet and other activities will also be offered in conjunction with the conference.

Registration is $45; $35 for Yale students ($15 for workshops and panels only). The public is welcome to attend. For Yale affiliates, the deadline for preregistration is Wednesday, April 11. Registration will also take place on Friday, April 13, 5-8 p.m. at the Afro-American Cultural Center, 211 Park St. For further details, visit the Yale African Students Association website at www.yale.edu/yasa.
