Berkeley Divinity School gets $1 million gift to fund new chapel
The Berkeley Divinity School at Yale has received a $1 million commitment from an anonymous donor toward the construction of its new chapel on the Sterling Divinity Quadrangle.
The gift is being made in honor of the Reverend Anne B. Kimball, a former associate dean and 1986 graduate of the school.
"This gift represents an extraordinary opportunity for the training of leaders for the Episcopal Church," says R. William Franklin, dean of the the Berkeley Divinity School. "The new St. Luke's Chapel, located directly across the Sterling Divinity Quadrangle from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, has the potential to make Yale/Berkeley the foremost center for the training of liturgists and musicians in the Anglican tradition in America."
The new St. Luke's Chapel is part of a $41.8 million comprehensive renovation of the Sterling Divinity Quadrangle. As part of the adaptive-reuse project, Berkeley Divinity School's worship, administrative and program facilities will move from their current location in the Berkeley Center, one block away from the Sterling Divinity Quadrangle, into the Quadrangle's two southwestern-most pavilions. Construction began on the site in August 2000; Berkeley's pavilions are slated for completion in the summer of 2002.
Anne B. Kimball served as associate dean of Berkeley Divinity School from 1994 until her retirement in 1999. In that role, she oversaw worship in St. Luke's Chapel, as well as the ministerial formation of students for lay and ordained leadership in the Episcopal Church.
The gift culminates a series of major commitments from individuals, parishes and dioceses within the Episcopal Church to the project. Other leadership gifts include a new Schoenstein organ for the chapel provided by an anonymous donor, $75,000 from St. Thomas Church in New York City and $50,000 from the Diocese of Connecticut. In addition, Berkeley also recently received $200,000 from St. James Church in New York City for student scholarships.
The Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, one of the 11 seminaries of the Episcopal Church, shares a faculty, student body and facilities with the Yale Divinity School. Episcopal students at Yale receive their degrees from Yale and a Diploma in Anglican Studies from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale.
