Robert Blake Gilpin of Trumbull College is this year's winner of the Paul Mellon Fellowship.
The fellowship, now in its 22nd year, funds two years of study at Clare College in Cambridge. It was made possible through the generosity of the late Paul Mellon '29, who also studied at Clare College following his graduation from Yale.
Gilpin will graduate this May with both a bachelor's and master's degree in history. He will continue his studies in history at Clare College, pursuing a master of philosophy degree. Gilpin hopes to extend his studies to the doctoral level in the coming years.
In addition to the Mellon Fellowship, Gilpin has received a number of other honors at Yale. He is the recipient of the Class of 1955 and the Alanne Linck fellowships. He also won the Andrew White Prize for Best History Essay and the Wallace Prize for Best Undergraduate Fiction.
Outside of academics, Gilpin is an accomplished athlete, a prize-winning writer of fiction, a banjo player, a photographer, and a connoisseur and collector of country music. The Paul Mellon Fellowship was also awarded to Carolyne Davidson of Clare College. Davidson will arrive at Yale in the fall of 2001 as a master's degree candidate in law and American studies.
