YES will announce Y50K award winners at April 14 gala
Winners of the year-long Y50K Yale Entrepreneurship Competition will be announced on Saturday, April 14, during the Yale Entrepreneurial Society's (YES) awards gala, which will begin at 2 p.m. in the Law School's Levinson Auditorium, 127 Wall St.
The event is free and open to the public.
Earlier that day, finalists in the competition will make live presentations about their enterprising ideas before a panel of judges. Prizes totaling $100,000 will then be awarded to the winning teams at the YES Y50K Awards Gala.
The awards gala will feature keynote speaker Herbert M. Allison Jr., president and chief executive officer of the University Alliance for Life-Long Learning and a former president of Merrill Lynch & Co. The gala will be followed by a reception in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, 121 Wall St.
The Y50K competition serves as the launching pad for companies that will revitalize the community and develop the next generation of business leaders. It helps to provide start-up funding, as well as educational, networking and mentoring opportunities, to Yale entrepreneurs.
This year's contest has been highly competitive, with 92 teams entering -- more than double last year's number.
The Y50K Awards Gala is also the focal point of a new partnership between YES, Yale University and New Haven to advance entrepreneurial progress in New Haven. Mayor John DeStefano Jr. has named the month of April as "YES to New Haven" month.
"Through its services, programs and incentives, New Haven has proven itself to be a desirable location for new businesses," DeStefano says. "The Y50K competition truly enhances the city's ability to encourage and support entrepreneurs."
YES is the founder and lead organizer of the Y50K. Founded in the fall of '99, YES is a University-wide organization which now has over 1,000 undergraduate, graduate, faculty and alumni members. Its mission is to promote and foster entrepreneurship in the greater Yale community.
