Dr. David Kessler, dean of the School of Medicine, will speak at a tea on Thursday, April 19, at 4:30 p.m. in the Calhoun College master's house, 434 College St.
The tea is free and open to the public.
Dean of the medical school since 1997, Kessler previously served as commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from 1990 to 1997. As commissioner of the FDA, Kessler acted to speed approval of new drugs and placed high priority on getting promising therapies for serious and life-threatening diseases to patients as quickly as possible. Under his direction, the FDA announced a number of new programs, including the regulation of the marketing and sale of tobacco products to children; preventive controls to improve food safety; and measures to strengthen the nation's blood supply.
Kessler's book, "A Question of Intent: A Great American Battle With A Deadly Industry," recounts the FDA's struggle to regulate tobacco products and its fight against the tobacco industry.
