Steven Smith has been reappointed as master of Branford College for a five-year term, President Richard C. Levin announced.
Smith, a professor of political science, will begin his second term as master on July 1.
In a letter to members of the Branford College community, Levin said that Smith's reappointment was recommended by a committee of Branford College students and fellows that was chaired by Lee Patterson, the Frederick W. Hilles Professor of English and chair of medieval studies.
"The committee ... described the great energy and dignity that Master Smith has brought to the students, fellows and staff of Branford College," Levin wrote. "In particular, praise has ranged from his untiring efforts to deal with the extraordinary difficulties associated with the renovation of the college to his commitment to Branford intramurals. In addition, Associate Master Susan Smith has been an integral part of the organization of events taking place in the college and the master's house."
Smith, who joined the Yale faculty in 1984, specializes in the history of political philosophy and has written widely on Hegel, Aristotle, Rousseau and Spinoza." He has also served as director of Special Programs in the Humanities.
