Three engineering alumni
honored with YSEA awards

Three Yale alumni who studied engineering at Yale and have distinguished themselves in their fields or in service to the community were honored with annual awards from the Yale Science & Engineering Association (YSEA).

The three -- Henry B. Schacht '56, William H. Oler '45E and Ralph T. Yang '68 M.S., '71 Ph.D. -- received the awards at a dinner held April 25 in Woolsey Hall.

Schacht, who was a Yale trustee 1988-2000, was presented the association's Award for Distinguished Service to Industry, Commerce or Education in recognition of his "outstanding business career and leadership of philanthropic and community-minded organizations," according to his citation. Schacht held management positions for more than 30 years at Cummins Engine Company, Inc., where he was chair and chief executive officer 1977-95. He also was chair of Avaya Communication and chair and chief executive officer of Lucent Technologies. He has been a trustee and chair of the Ford Foundation, a trustee of the Rockefeller Foundation and the Urban Institute, and was a member of the President's Commission for National Agenda for the '80s and of the Yale School of Management's advisory board. He currently is on the board of directors of Avaya, Johnson & Johnson Corporation, ALCOA, The New York Times Company and Knoll Inc.

Oler, who has held executive positions with corporations in the engineering, textile and other fields, was honored with the Award for Meritorious Service to Yale University. Oler has served as member of the YSEA's board for over 40 years and has been president of the organization. He also has chaired various YSEA committees. For the past decade, he has been secretary of the Class of 1945. In addition, he has been a delegate and member of the Board of Governors of the Association of Yale Alumni (AYA), and chaired the AYA's 10th assembly and some of its committees. His other activities include serving as president of the Yale Alumni Association of Greenwich, president of the Yale Glee Club Associated and the Whiffenpoof Alumni. For his many years of service to Yale, he was awarded the University's highest honor, the Yale Medal, in 1981.

Yang, a professor of chemical engineering and chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan, was presented the Award for Advancement of Basic and Applied Science. Yang's research interests include adsorption (particularly gas adsorption for the purpose of separation and purification), the creation of new, synthetic adsorbent materials, environmental catalysis and gas-carbon reactions. He has served as program director for the National Science Foundation and as a director of the Separations Division of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE). A fellow of the AIChE, he received the institute's W.H. Walker Award for excellence in contributions of chemical engineering literature, its Award for Excellence in Industrial Gases Technology and its Clarence Gerhold Award from the Separations Division, among other honors. He is the author of one book and more than 250 journal articles, and holds 14 U.S. patents.

The Yale Science and Engineering Association promotes the study of engineering and science at Yale; provides research grants, prizes and scholarships to students; recognizes and publicizes the accomplishments of faculty and alumni through special awards and prizes; and promotes interaction between Yale and its alumni and between the University and private and public enterprise.
