Fourteen scientists win NARSAD grants for psychiatric research
The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD) has awarded 14 grants totaling $840,000 to Yale scientists for psychiatric research.
Each of the researchers will receive a Young Investigator award of $60,000. The awards provide early career support for scientists, and are given to those who are expected to play key roles in discovering the causes, new treatments and eventual cures for mental illness.
The NARSAD-funded researchers and their areas of research are: Amit Anand, bipolar disorder; Kevin Behar, depression; Dr. Robert Andrew Chambers, schizophrenia; Kristin Haga, post-stroke depression; Fiona Inglis, schizophrenia; Joan Kaufman, child/adolescent and adult-onset depression; Fusun Kilic, depression; Dr. Jaakko Lappalainen, depression; Dr. Daniel Mathalon, schizophrenia; Adrian Preda, schizophrenia; Dr. Gerard Sanacora, depression; Gerald Valentine, depression; Sheila Wang, post-traumatic stress disorder; and Dr. Zoran Zimolo, bone loss in patients with schizophrenia and depression.
NARSAD is the largest non-governmental organization funding research in brain disorders worldwide. NARSAD's Scientific Review Council, composed of 65 scientists and academic leaders in all areas of neurobiological and psychiatric research, combs through hundreds of applications each year to find the most promising research proposals. In addition to its Young Investigator awards, NARSAD also provides continuing support for distinguished and independent investigators.
