Feted philosopher will reveal
his comedic side at 'Cohenfest'

A conference honoring noted political philosopher G.A. Cohen of Oxford University Friday-Saturday, May 11-12, will feature presentations by other philosophers and political theorists as well as a comedy night featuring a solo performance by Cohen.

The "Cohenfest" is being held on the occasion of the philosopher's 60th birthday. All events are free and open to the public.

Scholars who work in areas in which Cohen has made contributions will present papers. This will be followed by the comments of a prepared discussant and then by questions and comments from the audience. Topics include "Taking People As They Are: Inequality and Incentives," "If You Are an Egalitarian, How Come You're Speaking English?," "One Hundred Years of Metamorphoses of Times Square," "Luck and Equality," "Equality and Responsibility," "How To Pursue Justice by Democratic Means" and "Democratic Dynamics: Does Democracy Engender Justice?"

Among the Yale faculty members taking part in the "Cohenfest" are Ian Shapiro, John Roemer and John Geanokoplos.

Presentations will be held 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday in Rm. 101 of Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High St.

On Saturday evening, Cohen, who has performed as a stand-up comedian and is known for his impersonations and wit, will present a solo comedy performance at 8 p.m. in Sudler Hall of William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall St.

Cohen is the Chichele Professor of Social Theory at All Souls College at Oxford. His book "Karl Marx's Theory of History: A Defense" helped created a school of analytical Marxism, which flourished in social science and philosophy during the 1980s. In recent years, Cohen has concentrated on philosophical arguments against capitalism and for socialism. In particular, he has constructed arguments for egalitarian conceptions of distributive justice. His most recent book is "If You're an Egalitarian, How Come You're So Rich?"
