"Skeptical Music: Essays on Modern Poetry," a book by David Bromwich, professor of English, will be published June 1 by the University of Chicago Press.
"Common Prayer: The Language of Public Devotion in Early Modern England," a book by Ramie Targoff, associate professor of English, was published May 1 by the University of Chicago Press.
Junior Katherine Mangu-Ward received a $5,000 cash grant for the academic year 2001-2002 under the Phillips Foundation's Future Leaders Program, which recognizes outstanding young people who are promoting American values on college campuses. The cash awards are designed to alleviate the financial burdens associated with higher education, permitting the winners to devote more time to pursuing their academic goals and advancing their leadership initiatives.
President Richard C. Levin recently announced the appointment or reappointment of the chairs of five departments. Ramamurti Shankar, professor of physics and applied physics, was appointed chair of the Department of Physics for a term of three years; he replaces Charles Baltay. Giuseppe Mazzotta, the Charles C. and Dorathea S. Dilley Professor of Italian Language and Literature, was appointed chair of the Department of Italian for a term of three years; he replaces Paolo Valesio. John Matthews was reappointed chair of the Department of Classics for a term of three years. Michael Snyder was reappointed chair of the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology for a term of three years. Edward Kamens was reappointed chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures for a term of two years. All of the appointments are effective July 1.
Max Page, a lecturer in the Department of History, received the Spiro Kostof Award from the Society of Architectural Historians in Toronto on April 19 for his book "The Creative Destruction of Manhattan, 19001940." The award, presented once every two years, recognizes "the work that, focusing on urbanism and architecture, provides the greatest contribution to our understanding of historical development and change."
