Psychologist Edward Zigler is lauded for lifetime achievements
Edward Zigler, Sterling Professor of Psychology and the Child Study Center, has been awarded the Connecticut Higher Education Lifetime Achievement Community Service Award.
The award publicly acknowledges outstanding leadership and contributions to the community. It is made by the Board of Governors for Higher Education, the Commissioner of Higher Education and the Connecticut Commission on National and Community Service.
"[ Zigler ] is one of the true giants in the field of child and family development," the presenters said in making the award. "A father of the Head Start program, he founded and directs the Bush Center in Child Development and Social Policy at Yale. While his work has been recognized and used internationally and nationally, Professor Zigler has always maintained a special focus on work locally, with important collaborations with schools and communities across Connecticut and with state-level policy makers."
Zigler's two principal contributions to state policy on children were helping to draft model legislation for preschool education under the Connecticut Readiness Bill and helping to develop a pilot paid family leave law. Family leaves are granted for new parents, to take care of sick children or to help with an ailing parent.
"One problem with the current Family Medical Leave Act is it only applies to women and men in companies with more than 50 employees," notes Zigler. "Another problem is that it is unpaid leave, which few people can afford to take. Every other Western industrialized country in the world has paid family leave. The research is very clear that mothers simply need that time home when the baby arrives. We call birth one of the normal developmental crises of life."
Zigler is also evaluating the effectiveness of training day care workers at community colleges.
