Men's golf team to compete
in regional championship

The Yale men's golf team has been selected to participate in the 2001 NCAA East Regional Championship May 17-19 at the Green Course of the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Virginia.

It is the fifth time in the last six years that Yale has made the NCAA Regionals.

The top 27 Division I golf teams and six individuals on the East Coast will be on hand to vie for a chance to move on to the NCAA Championships on May 30-June 2 at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina. The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on those teams advance to the NCAA Championships.

The top three teams in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings will be joining the Bulldogs in Williamsburg. Number one Georgia headlines the field after winning the SEC Championship by 16 strokes three weeks ago. Number two Georgia Tech won the ACC Championship by eight strokes over number three Clemson.

The other teams in the field are: University of Alabama at Birmingham; Auburn; Charleston Southern; Duke; East Tennessee State; Florida; Georgia; Georgia State; Georgia Southern; Hartford; Iona; Louisiana State; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Mississippi; North Carolina State; Penn State; Princeton; Rhode Island; Richmond; St. John's; Seton Hall; Virginia Commonwealth; Virginia Tech and Xavier.

The six individuals are: Cameron Yancy of Virginia, Nick Rousey of Alabama, Kirk Satterfield of Furman, Jan Rae Larsen of Alabama, Rafael Vera of Coastal Carolina and Brandt Snedket of Vanderbilt.

Yale, which has won 21 NCAA golf championships, finished third in the Ivy League Championship and second at the New England Championships. Junior Chris Eckerle, who won the New England individual title, has the team's top stroke average (75.4). The Bulldogs also boast the Ivy League individual winner, senior Louis Aurelio.
