Commencement Concert to mark closing of Morse Recital Hall for renovations
Just as graduation marks a rite-of-passage for Yale students, the School of Music's Commencement Concert this year will be a watershed event in the life of Morse Recital Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall.
Following the concert, the hall will be closed for extensive renovations as part of a plan to refurbish all of Yale's music facilities over the next five to seven years. When the hall reopens in the fall of 2002, it will have improved amenities for concert-goers, including air conditioning and more comfortable lobbies.
Music Dean Robert Blocker began holding Commencement Concerts in 1996 to give family members and friends of graduating students an opportunity to hear the high level of music-making at the school. However, the public is also welcome to attend the event free of charge.
The hour-long program, which will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, will showcase students who have come from all over the world to study at Yale, including baritone Krysztof Kowalewski of Poland, trumpet soloist Erika Shafer of the United States, harpsichordist Anne Nissinen of Finland and violist Antoine Tamestit of France. Featured ensembles will include a string quartet and the four members of the the Yale Percussion Group performing on one marimba.
Morse Hall in Sprague Memorial Hall is located at 470 College St. For further information, call (203) 432-4158.
