Dr. Robert M. Weiss



Dr. Robert Weiss appointed Guthrie Professor

Dr. Robert M. Weiss, the newly named Donald Guthrie Professor of Surgery, is a specialist in pediatric urology and urologic surgery.

For his work in those areas, he was listed among the physicians in the latest edition of "Best Doctors in America: Northeast Region," which is based on a survey of more than 7,000 doctors in the northeastern states. He serves as chair of the Department of Surgery's Section of Urology at the School of Medicine.

Weiss' research has focused on topics ranging from the biochemical and functional changes in the bladder of diabetics to ureteral function with an implantable ureteral pacemaker and the use of pulse Doppler sonography in the diagnosis of urinary tract obstruction in children. He has written over 100 scientific papers on urologic problems and diseases affecting children and adults. His work has been supported by grants from the Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, the Institute of Aging and the Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases, among others.

Weiss came to Yale as an instructor in 1967 after teaching in the Department of Pharmacology at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. He earned his B.S. from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and an M.D. from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. He completed his training in New York City with an internship at Bellevue Hospital, a residency in general surgery at Beth Israel Hospital and a residency in urology at Squier Urological Clinic at Presbyterian Hospital.

At Yale, Weiss became an assistant professor in 1968, an associate professor in 1971 and a professor in 1976. He has served as chief of the Section of Urology since 1988, when he also became head of the Section of Urology at Yale-New Haven Hospital (Y-NHH). Since 1999, Weiss has also served as interim chief of the Department of Surgery at Y-NHH and as interim chair of the Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine. Since 1977, he has also been an adjunct professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University.

The Yale physician is a consultant in urology to numerous Connecticut hospitals, including the Hospital of St. Raphael, Norwalk Hospital, Waterbury Hospital, Sharon Hospital and the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven. A trustee of the American Board of Urology, he is also a member of the board of governors for the Yale Medical Group (formerly called the Yale Faculty Practice) and the medical board of Y-NHH, as well as of numerous University and hospital committees. He has been a consultant to committees or programs of the National Institutes of Health, the National Kidney Foundation and other national organizations.

In recognition of his contributions and leadership in the field of neurourology, Weiss received the Urodynamic Society's Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a member of the American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons, the American Surgical Association, the American Physiological Society, the Society for Pediatric Urology, the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences and other professional societies.
