Distinguished financial manager Theodore P. Shen has joined the Yale Corporation as an alumni fellow.

An alumni fellow is elected each year to a six-year term on Yale's governing board in balloting by Yale graduates around the world.

Widely recognized as one of the most innovative and effective financial managers on Wall Street, Shen retired as chair of the Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ) Capital Markets Group in 1999 after 15 years in that position. During his 31-year career at DLJ, he played an instrumental role in the development of the firm from a fledgling business to a leader in the investment banking industry.

Shen joined DLJ as an investment analyst specializing in the airline industry and in portfolio strategy. In 1978 he was promoted to director of research and in 1981 became head of DLJ's equities division. In 1984 he was elected to DLJ's board of directors and named head of DLJ's Capital Markets Group, which encompassed the firm's equities, fixed-income, high-yield finance and venture capital businesses.

Born in New York City in 1945, Shen grew up in Hamden, Connecticut. The son of a Yale faculty member, he attended Phillips Exeter Academy, graduated from Yale in 1966, and earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1968. As an alumnus, he has served Yale in many capacities, including membership on the University Council and support for Yale's squash program. He was recently elected to the Board of the Yale University Art Gallery. His daughter graduated from Yale in 1999.

Shen has said of Yale: "Although I received a great foundation in economics at Yale, what I treasure most from my undergraduate experience is the lasting influence it has had on my interests and values. Yale's breadth of great teaching inspired lifelong passions in areas to which I had not been exposed, such as the arts and humanities, and its unique fostering of community shaped my appreciation of social responsibility and service."

Shen is co-head of the board of trustees of Phillips Exeter Academy and served as board chair of The Packer Collegiate Institute. His community service includes membership on the board and executive committee of the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Art Commission of the City of New York. He is also director of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Coalition, an advocacy group seeking to turn inactive waterfront property into a public park.
