EPH alumni make 'honor roll'
for their public health careers

The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH) at the School of Medicine has recognized 50 of its alumni for their exemplary careers in government and community organizations by naming them on its first EPH Alumni Public Service Honor Roll.

EPH launched the distinction to recognize alumni who have dedicated a significant portion of their careers to public service and, in particular, to the department's mission of promoting and ensuring a healthy public as a prerequisite for social justice and human development.

The EPH alumni awards committee began the honor roll this year in keeping with the department's theme of public service during the University's Tercentennial year. The department is observing the Tercentennial by reaffirming that theme in a rededication of the school to its basic mission as first articulated by the school's founder, C-E.A. Winslow. Faculty and students in the department have joined in by demonstrating their commitment to public health, especially to those people who have been politically disenfranchised and those who are economically disadvantaged.

The individuals selected for the first EPH Alumni Public Service Honor Roll include local health directors working in Connecticut and other states; state government officials across the country, including two state health commissioners; over 20 federal officials -- among these individuals in the public health service and in the Armed Services; alumni across the globe who have served international organizations like the World Health Organization; and graduates who have spent careers in local community organizations such as neighborhood health centers, legal aid societies, health advocacy groups, school health programs, housing projects and voluntary sector health and human service organizations. All have made significant contributions to the field of public health.

EPH recently celebrated its Alumni Day, which included workshops examining the theme "Public Health Challenges of the 21st Century" and the presentation of the Distinguished Alumni Award to Dr. James L. Hadler '81 M.P.H., Connecticut state epidemiologist and director of the state's Emerging Infectious Disease Program.
