Faculty sharing expertise on Discovery Health Channel

Discovery Health Channel and the School of Medicine have announced a groundbreaking partnership that combines the knowledge and expertise of the Yale faculty with the far-reaching influence of the Discovery Health Channel.

In addition to extensive use of Yale professors throughout Discovery Health programming, the partnership calls for a significant Yale presence on the channel's companion website, discoveryhealth.com.

Discovery Health Channel, with research and other assistance from Yale, will produce four one-hour program specials relating to adult and children's health over the next two years. And, Yale faculty will contribute regularly to the following features on discoveryhealth.com:

"Family Matters": a biweekly Yale online column from experts at the Yale Child Study Center covering parenting and child development issues such as planning for a baby, preparing for parenthood, advances in early brain development, aggression in toddlers, adolescence, cliques and gangs, dating and much more;

"Cutting-Edge Medicine": a monthly Yale online column about new medical technology, breakthroughs and emerging state-of-the-art treatments; and

"The Views on Health News": a biweekly online column based on an interview with a Yale expert about an issue or controversy in health care recently highlighted in the news.

President Richard C. Levin said Yale is looking forward to this new partnership with Discovery Health. "This is a great opportunity to highlight the skills and knowledge of our exceptional medical faculty and staff," said Levin. "I am pleased that Yale, Discovery Health Channel and discoveryhealth.com will use their combined talents and resources to provide timely and expert health information to television viewers and online users."

"We are extremely proud of this partnership. It brings together two institutions already recognized for their integrity and their traditions of service to the community," said Donald Thoms, interim general manager of Discovery Health Channel. "Working together, Discovery Health Channel and Yale can explore the latest high-tech discoveries. More importantly, we can also offer the kind of practical, medical know-how that our viewers and online readers need and use on a day-to-day basis."

The Discovery Health Channel website, already recognized by the public as a key source for information on wellness and medical issues, provides an ideal venue for the kind of hands-on advice to be provided by the Yale staff of pediatricians and specialists, said officials from the two enterprises.

The School of Medicine, established in 1810, was the first medical school in the United States to award medical degrees. Among its major contributions are isolating the polio virus, the early use of cancer chemotherapy, developing AIDS medications and a Lyme disease vaccine, and making breakthroughs in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, depression and other mental disorders.

"The Yale School of Medicine is an acknowledged leader in research, teaching and patient care," said Dr. David A. Kessler, dean of the School of Medicine. "The remarkable medical discoveries being made at Yale, and the great advances in treatment that we are developing and practicing, are of value to everyone. Our service includes increasing public understanding of both the progress we are making and the challenges we face, and working with Discovery Health will support that goal."

Yale faculty participating in the partnership will include: Drs. Charlotte Bell, Donald Cohen, Linda Mayes, Keith Ruskin and John Schowalter.

Discovery Health Channel takes viewers inside the world of health, medicine and wellness through medical breakthroughs and inspiring real-life stories of individual and medical triumphs. Created by the people who founded the Discovery Channel, Discovery Health Channel and discoveryhealth.com are part of a multi-media business designed to help consumers lead healthier, more vigorous lives. Together, they reveal the science behind everyday human experiences, giving viewers a deeper understanding of the ever-changing health and medical environment.
