Berkeley Divinity School announces new appointments
Five church leaders have been newly elected to the board of trustees of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale.
George A. Fowlkes and G. William Haas, both of New York City, the Right Reverend Victoria Matthews of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Right Reverend Keith B. Whitmore of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and Marietta E. Zakas of Atlanta, Georgia, will begin four-year terms in July.
George A. Fowlkes retired last year as president of the Episcopal Church Foundation. Fowlkes has held numerous lay leadership roles in the Episcopal Church, including serving as two-time senior warden of St. James Church, New York City, a trustee of the Diocese of New York and the South Bronx Church's Housing Project, president of the Episcopal Missions Society and a director of the Board of Foreign Parishes. He also serves on Berkeley's National Advisory Council.
G. William Haas is a partner in the law firm of Morrison Cohen Singer & Weinstein in New York. A 1971 Yale College graduate, Haas is senior warden of St. Thomas Church, New York City, treasurer of the Church Club of New York, a trustee of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and a member of Berkeley's National Advisory Council.
The Right Reverend Victoria Matthews, bishop of Edmonton, was the first woman ordained to the episcopate in the Anglican Church of Canada. She led several parishes in the Diocese of Toronto and served on the Faculty of Divinity at Trinity College before being ordained a bishop in 1994. Matthews was Canadian chair for Affirming Anglican Catholicism (North America) and a member of the Design Group for the 1998 Lambeth Conference. She earned an M.Div. from Yale in 1979 and is also a trustee of the University.
The Right Reverend Keith B. Whitmore became bishop of the Diocese of Eau Claire in 1999. Previously, he was dean of Christ Cathedral in Salina, Kansas, having led congregations in Missouri and Wisconsin.
Marietta E. "Martie" Zakas is a business executive and consultant who has held leadership roles at Morgan Stanley, Holiday Inn and Equifax, Inc. She is a member of All Saints, Atlanta, Georgia.
In addition to these trustees, the Reverend Rebecca S. Chopp, the new dean of the Yale Divinity School, joins the Berkeley board this year as an ex officio trustee.
Another new member of the Berkeley Divinity School community is Pamela Stewart Wesley, a veteran stewardship and development leader in the Episcopal Church, who has been appointed the school's director of development and external affairs, effective July 1.
"I am thrilled that Pam Wesley will lead Berkeley's development efforts during this time of expansion and opportunity in the life of the school," said R. William Franklin, dean of Berkeley Divinity School. "She brings a remarkable depth of experience in the Episcopal Church and proven track record as a fundraiser. With her help, I am confident that we can increase the strong momentum of support already under way for Berkeley."
Wesley comes to Berkeley most recently from the Fairfield County Foundation. Previously, she was director of marketing and education for gift planning services and a planned giving field representative at the Episcopal Church Foundation. She had spent 12 years prior to that at Christ Church, Greenwich, Connecticut, where she was director of stewardship and endowment and capital campaign director.
Wesley is coauthor of "Funding Future Ministry" (with Charles Gearing and Frederick Osborn) and has taught stewardship at Berkeley Divinity School, the College of Bishops and the Academy of Episcopal Philanthropy.
Wesley cochairs the stewardship committee of the Consortium of Endowed Episcopal Parishes, where she has also been a member of the executive committee and secretary of the board of directors. She was a director of the Episcopal Network for Stewardship, annual fundraising coordinator for the Office of the Anglican Observer at
