Sun Days: A Photo Essay

Hundreds of area youngsters aged 10-16 are spending part of their summer vacation honing their skills both on the athletic field and in the classroom through the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) at Yale.

NYSP -- a partnership of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the National Collegiate Athletic Association -- sponsors summer day camps for inner-city youths throughout the country. Last year, the NYSP honored the Yale program for providing daily and weekly incentive awards, hosting weekly barbecues and giving youths the opportunity to participate in the NYSP "General Store," a work and incentive program.

The University's summer camp, which is now in its sixth year, is run by Yale athletes and staff, along with area high school students, coaches and educators. Students spend part of their time in Yale's athletic facilities learning the finer points of various group sports and getting physical education instruction, and part of their time in campus classrooms acquiring skills that can help them in future career and educational opportunities. Specific topics include health education -- particularly drug and alcohol awareness -- as well as hands-on math and science.

Participation in the camps is free, and the youngsters also receive free breakfast and lunch.
