Fair to highlight resources for those with disabilities
To acquaint members of the Yale community with the various technologies and resources available to support students and employees with disabilities, the University will host "Access Yale! An Assistive Technology Exposition" on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
The exposition, which is sponsored by the Provost's Advisory Committee on Resources for Students and Employees with Disabilities in celebration of Yale's Tercentennial, will take place 10 a.m.-3 p.m. under a tent on the Cross Campus courtyard. It will include demonstrations and hands-on use of the technologies. Visitors will be eligible for raffle prizes and name tags produced in braille.
Among the products being demonstrated are software that converts speech to text, text to speech and text to braille; a wheelchair that can navigate a sandy beach and one that can stand a person upright; FM transmitters that amplify sounds and speech; academic texts produced on audio tape; and machines that magnify images. Visitors will also be able to test their skills using foot pedals to move a cursor on a computer monitor, drive an electric cart and try out a trackball and an ergonomic keyboard, among other technologies. Also on hand will be special products that simulate what it is like to experience varying degrees of vision loss.
Information will be available on the University's services for students, employees and alumni through the Resource Office on Disabilities, the Office for Equal Opportunities Programs and Library Services.
All are welcome to attend the exposition.
