School of Music celebrates new
year with concert, convocation

The School of Music will officially herald in the new academic year with its traditional Convocation and Concert on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 7:30 p.m.

Because the school's primary concert venue, Sprague Memorial Hall, is closed for renovations, the event will be held in Battell Chapel, corner of Elm and College streets.

Half ceremony and half concert, the event will feature a performance by the Mitchell-Ruff Duo, featuring Dwike Mitchell on piano and Professor Willie Ruff on bass and horn.

The performance will also include several fanfares that Yale commissioned to celebrate its Tercentennial, including those by Professors Martin Bresnick and Ezra Laderman and Yale student Daniel Kellogg.

Rounding out the musical portion of the program will be a performance by organist Paul Jacobs, a master's student at the School of Music.

The event is free and open to the public.

President Richard C. Levin and School of Music Dean Robert L. Blocker will host the event, which will also feature the formal announcement of a major gift to the school by composer Mitch Leigh and the naming of the School of Music building at 435 College St. as the Abby and Mitch Leigh Music Building.

For further information, call the School of Music's Concert Office at (203) 432-4158 or visit the school's website at www.yale.edu/schmus.
