Brewer returns to Yale as Weyerhaeuser Professor
Garry Brewer, who has joined the Yale faculty as the Frederick K. Weyerhaeuser Professor of Resource Policy and Management, is a leader in the field of policy science with expertise in environmental management.
He began his joint appointment at the School of Management and the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies in July.
Brewer, who previously taught at Yale from 1974 to 1991, became the first incumbent of the Weyerhaeuser chair when he was originally appointed to the professorship in 1984. He is the author, coauthor or editor of nine books and over 195 professional publications on a wide range of topics, including contributions on organizational complexity and behavior, computer applications to social and national security problems, political and economic development, forecasting and strategic planning, and several forms of environmental management and resource matters.
Since 1998, he has served as the dean of the University of California at Berkeley Extension, as well as professor of environmental policy and management in Berkeley's Energy and Resources Group. From 1998 to 1999, he was the King Carl XVI Gustaf Professor of Environmental Sciences and Management at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
Brewer also taught for seven years at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where he served as dean of the School of Natural Resources and the Environment 1992-95. He founded the school's Corporate Environmental Management Program and the Frederick and Barbara Erb Environmental Management Institute.
A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Brewer obtained an M.S. in public administration from San Diego State University. He was an officer in the U.S. Navy, serving in Vietnam, before he earned M.Phil. (1968) and Ph.D. (1970) degrees from Yale in political science.
After serving on the senior staff of The RAND Corporation, Brewer returned to Yale in 1974 as an associate professor at the School of Management, rising to full professor in 1978. In 1980 he was appointed a professor in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, where he was the Frederick K. Weyerhaeuser Professor from 1984 until 1990. That year, he was appointed the Edwin W. Davis Professor.
At Yale, Brewer also held appointments in the Departments of Political Science, Operations Research, and Epidemiology & Public Health. He founded and directed the Industrial Environmental Management Program 1990-91 and directed the Institution for Social and Policy Studies in 1991.
Brewer has served on and chaired numerous national and international panels. His many awards include the 2000 Harold D. Lasswell Award from the Policy Studies Organization for "contributing to our understanding of the substance and process of public policy." He is a lifelong member of the Society for Values in Higher Education.
