Auction to raise funds to fight hunger and homelessness
A week in a London flat, a baseball autographed by the legendary Hank Aaron, sushi-making lessons for 10 -- these are some of the items featured in this year's Hunger and Homelessness Auction sponsored by students in Yale's medicine and public health programs.
By uniting the students and faculty of Yale's health professional schools with local businesses, the auction seeks to raise awareness and funds for community organizations devoted to issues of hunger and homelessness.
This year's event will feature a silent auction Tuesday-Thursday, Nov. 13-15. This will be followed by a live auction with Medical School Dean Dr. David Kessler and Mayor John DeStefano Jr. and others from the Yale and New Haven communities 4:30-6 p.m. on Nov. 15. Wine and cheese will be served. Both events will take place in the Sterling Hall of Medicine, 333 Cedar St. The public is invited.
The spirit of the auctions is rounded out by a week-long series of events including lectures, a canned food drive and additional fundraisers.
The annual Hunger and Homelessness Auction was created eight years ago by students at the Yale School of Medicine and its Department of Epidemiology and Public Health who were interested in alleviating hunger and homelessness in the Greater New Haven area. Last year the event raised over $25,000, and provided grants to Columbus House, Community Soup Kitchen, FISH of Greater New Haven, Life Haven and St. Thomas More.
