Rescheduled talks to explore
Sept. 11 events, evolution

Two events, a lecture by the president of The New York Times and a dialogue between a biologist and a theologian, which were cancelled in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, have been rescheduled for this week.

Gordon Grand Fellowship Lecture

Janet L. Robinson, president and general manager of The New York Times, was originally scheduled to present a Gordon Grand Fellowship lecture on Oct. 16. Her talk, "The New York Times ... Sept. 11th and Beyond," will now take place at a tea on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m. in the Saybrook College master's house, 90 High St. The event is free and open to the public.

President and general manager of The New York Times newspaper since 1996, Robinson is also senior vice president of newspaper operations. She was a public school teacher early in her career, before joining The Times Company in 1983. Her honors include recognition in the September 1999 issue of Crain's New York Business as one of the "100 Most Influential Women in Business," New York University's 1999 Prism Award for outstanding leadership in the graphic arts industry and induction into the YWCA's Academy of Women Achievers in 1998, which celebrates the accomplishments of the nation's most outstanding professional women.

Thomas E. Golden Jr. Faith and Science Fellowship Lecture

Kenneth R. Miller, professor of biology at Brown University, will engage in a dialogue with John F. Haught, the Landegger Distinguished Professor of Theology at Georgetown University, on Monday, Nov. 12, at 4 p.m. at Saint Thomas More, the Catholic Chapel and Center at Yale, 268 Park St. Titled "Finding God After Darwin: A Dialogue Between a Biologist and a Theologian," the Thomas E. Golden Jr. Faith and Science Fellowship Lecture was originally scheduled to take place on Sept. 17. All are welcome to attend this free event.

Cell biologist Miller is the author of "Finding Darwin's God: A Scientist's Search for Common Ground Between God and Evolution" (1999) and coauthor of widely used high school and college biology textbooks. His articles have appeared in Nature, Scientific American, Cell and Discover.

Systematic theologian Haught is the author of "God After Darwin: A Theology of Evolution" (2000) and "Science and Religion: From Conflict to Conversation" (1995). He recently established the Georgetown Center for the Study of Science and Religion.
