Ireland's former prime minister to speak at YCIAS
John Bruton, former prime minister of Ireland, will discuss "The Future of the European Union as a Partner of the U.S." on Monday, Nov. 12, at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of Luce Hall, 34 Hillhouse Ave.
Sponsored by the Yale Center for International and Area Studies, the talk is free and open to the public.
Prior to being elected prime minister of Ireland in 1994, Bruton was president in the Office of the European Council JuneDecember 1996. As such, he presided over the Irish presidency of the European Union and helped finalize the Growth and Stability Pact that governs the management of the single European currency, the Euro. He was leader of the Fine Gael party in Ireland from 1990 to 1999.
Currently, Bruton is vice president of the European People's Party, a position he has held since 1999. In this capacity he is co-chairing a study of the reform of the common agricultural policy of the European Union in the context of concerns about farm incomes, food safety and environmental production. He is also vice president of the Christian Democrat International.
