Ackerman to propose 'New Paradigm for Campaign Finance'
Bruce Ackerman, Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science, will present his vision for campaign finance reform as the featured speaker in the Brennan Center Jorde Symposium.
Established in 1996, the Jorde Symposium is named for its major benefactor, Thomas M. Jorde, a professor of law at the University of California at Berkeley. The series, which honors distinguished scholars who have made major contributions to legal scholarship or jurisprudence, is unique in that it travels the country. Each year two talks are given by the same speaker -- one at Berkeley and one at a different law school -- with a different pair of commentators.
The talk at Yale will take place 4:10-6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Rm. 127 of the Law School, 127 Wall St. All are invited to attend.
Ackerman' talk is titled "Voting with Dollars: a New Paradigm for Campaign Finance," which is also the title of his new book coauthored with his Yale colleague Ian Ayres, the William K. Townsend Professor of Law and a professor at the School of Management. In the book, the professors propose revising the campaign finance system by making candidates and political organizations compete for the "patriot dollars" presented to registered voters by the government.
Commenting on Ackerman's talk will be John A. Ferejohn, the Carolyn S.G. Munro Professor of Political Science and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, and Richard A. Briffault, the Joseph P. Chamberlain Professor of Legislation and vice dean of Columbia Law School. Following their presentations, Ayres will offer a brief rebuttal.
The Jorde Symposium that will be held in the UC Berkeley School of Law, will feature as commentators Pamela S. Karlans, the Kenneth & Harle Montgomery Professor of Public Interest Law at Stanford Law School, and David A. Strauss, the Harry N. Wyatt Professor of Law and Russell Baker Scholar at the University of Chicago.
