Harpsichordist Paul Cienniwa will make his debut at the Yale Collection of Musical Instruments on Sunday, Dec. 2, with a performance of Carl Phillipp Emanuel Bach's six "Prussian Sonatas."
The works were published in 1742 and dedicated to King Frederick the Great while Bach was in residence in Berlin as a court composer. The audience will have the rare opportunity of hearing the sonatas performed on the grand two-manual harpsichord built by J.A. Hass circa 1760 in Hamburg, the city where C.P.E. Bach spent the last years of his life (1767-1788).
Cienniwa studied harpsichord under Richard Rephann at the School of Music and was awarded Fulbright and Belgian American Educational Foundation grants in 1998. He is currently on the faculties of the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and Salve Regina University. He also serves as director of Liturgical Music at St. Mary's Church in Newport, Rhode Island, and established the vocal ensemble Collegium Musicum Newport.
The concert will take place at 3 p.m. in the second-floor gallery of the Collection of Musical Instruments, 15 Hillhouse Ave. Tickets are $20; $15 for faculty, staff and senior citizens; and $10 for students. For information or ticket reservations, call (203) 432-0825.
The Collection of Musical Instruments contains over 800 instruments, the majority of which document the Western European music tradition. The collection is open for viewing to members of the Yale community free of charge; a $2 donation is requested from the general public.
