Yale School of Management
bolsters its senior faculty ranks

As it has for the past three years, the Yale ,School of Management (SOM) came several steps closer to its goal of increasing senior faculty by 60% this fall with the addition of a roster of new, top-tiered scholars to its ranks.

"As scholars and teachers, these professors have made extraordinary contributions to their diverse and respective fields," says SOM Dean Jeffrey E. Garten. "We continue to strengthen and deepen our faculty by recruiting accomplished senior faculty and junior faculty with excellent potential. This year, we added faculty in a variety of areas, including two on the interface of finance and economics. The future goal is to solidify our gains, and to hire more in accounting."

In addition to world renowned financial expert Florencio López-de-Silanes, who is profiled separately (see story), the new SOM scholars include:

Tenured appointments

Garry D. Brewer, the Frederick K. Weyerhaeuser Professor of Resource Policy & Management, is an accomplished leader in the field of policy science with expertise in environmental management. He holds a joint appointment with the School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. Brewer had served since 1998 as dean of the University of California at Berkeley Extension, as well as professor of environmental policy and management in Berkeley's Energy and Resources Group, an interdisciplinary, graduate-level unit. From 1998 to 1999, he was King Carl XVI Gustaf Professor of Environmental Sciences and Management at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He was elected in 1998 to life membership in the Royal Swedish Academy.

Judith A. Chevalier, professor of finance and economics, is knowledgeable in the interaction between firm capital structure and product market competition; price seasonality and cyclicality; testing models of agency relationships and career concerns; the economics of electronic commerce and the effect of diversification on firm performance. In 1999, Chevalier won the first biennial Elaine Bennett prize given by the American Economic Association in recognition of research by a young woman in any area of economics. Prior to her SOM appointment, she taught at the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business.

Benjamin Polak, professor of economics and management, was associate professor of economics in Yale's Department of Economics, but now has full tenured appointments there and at SOM. An expert on decision theory, game theory and economic history, Polak's work explores economic agents whose goals are richer than those captured in traditional models. His work on game theory ranges from foundational theoretical work on common knowledge to applied topics in corporate finance and law and economics. Most recently, he made contributions to the theory of repeated games with asymmetric information. Polak is currently engaged in an ambitious empirical project that tackles questions of industrial organization in the setting of industrial revolution in England.

Tenure-track appointments

Nathaniel O. Keohane, assistant professor of economics, is doing research on the theory and practice of environmental policy. His current projects examine the effects of the 1990 Clean Air Act on how electric power plants control pollution; the optimal choice of environmental policy instruments when technical change is endogenous; and the management of stocks and flows to promote environmental quality.

Dina Mayzlin, assistant professor of marketing, is an expert in the areas of Internet marketing, health care marketing and economic models of behavioral phenomena. Mayzlin's research focuses on word-of-mouth online. She is studying how firms can influence online conversations as well as how firms can measure these conversations to perform market research. Her other interests include public relations and the marketing of fashion goods.

Rodney P. Parker, assistant professor of operations management, has an overall interest in the management and operation of production and inventory in multi-echelon systems. Specifically, he focuses on the role of capacity and manufacturing technology in supply chains. He is also interested in non-cooperative and competitive behavior in supply chains, and especially in the resulting effects upon capital investment choices. Finally, he explores issues in the health care field, encompassing both operational and clinical problems, to be addressed with quantitative analytical models.

K. Sudhir, assistant professor of marketing, is an expert on competitive marketing strategy. His research primarily focuses on empirically understanding competitive strategies of firms. Sudhir also has research interests in modeling consumer choice, global product diffusion and online competition. His research has been published in top marketing journals. Sudhir comes to Yale SOM from New York University's Stern School of Business, where he was an assistant professor of marketing from 1998-2001. He was a lecturer at Cornell's Johnson School in 1995 and at Cornell's School of Hotel Administration in 1996.
