Florencio López-de-Silanes, expert in
world finances, to head new institute

Florencio López-de-Silanes, a renowned expert in world finances, has joined the faculty of the Yale School of Management (SOM) as professor of finance and economics, and director of the International Institute for Corporate Governance which the school intends to establish soon within its International Center for Finance.

"Florencio is one of the great scholars in a critical arena of the world economy," says SOM Dean Jeffrey E. Garten. "He will contribute greatly to the rich research agenda already underway at the International Center for Finance."

López-de-Silanes is a leader and scholar in the areas of international corporate finance, financial markets, corporate governance and legal reform, privatization and deregulation.

He is a founding member of the Blue Ribbon Panel on Corporate Governance in Russia and the Committee on Best Corporate Practices in Mexico. He has helped international companies in their efforts to improve their corporate governance practices and served as an adviser to stock market commissions in several countries. López-de-Silanes has also been an adviser to the governments of Russia, Peru, Malaysia, Egypt, Yemen, Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico on issues of financial markets' regulation, corporate and bankruptcy law reform, industrial policy and privatization.

Recently, he was a consultant to the International Monetary Fund and to the World Bank on issues of corporate governance. His main publications fall in the areas of corporate finance, legal reform of financial markets, corporate and bankruptcy law, privatization, trade and industrial policy particularly with respect to NAFTA.

The recipient of numerous honors, López-de-Silanes graduated with highest honors from Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, and he has master's and doctoral degrees in economics from Harvard University, where he has been a professor since 1994.
