Medical students donating proceeds
from show to mobile health care van

The School of Medicine's Class of 2003 presented ticket receipts from their Second Year Show, an annual variety entertainment revue, to the Community Health Care Van (CHCV), a mobile Yale program that provides free community health care and other services in collaboration with various community health care and City of New Haven public health programs.

The donation, which totaled more than $5,000, was presented on Dec. 14 to Dr. Frederick Altice, associate professor of internal medicine and director of the CHCV program.

The CHCV program equips and operates the van, staffed by Yale medical faculty and staff and community health care volunteers. They travel to poor neighborhoods around the city to provide health care, counseling and other services for the homeless and others who do not otherwise have access to health care. The program serves more than 300 New Haven residents each month.

For more than 40 years, the second-year class in the School of Medicine has come together to produce, write and perform in the Second Year Show. The members of the class donate ticket proceeds to a worthy organization. The 104 members of this year's class chose to give the money to the CHCV because of its community public health efforts, according to medical student Mark Berman, who co-produced the Second Year Show.

"Without a doubt," he says, "the Second Year Show was one of the greatest experiences we have had as a medical school class. What made it even greater was the opportunity to raise money for a worthy cause."
