Fellowships for foreign study
and travel offered by YCIAS

The Yale Center for International and Area Studies (YCIAS) once again is offering grant and fellowship opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Funding is available for dissertation research, pre-dissertation research, language study, summer travel, study and internship support and academic year study, among others.

In 2001, YCIAS and its councils, committee and programs offered more than $1.6 million in aid to Yale students. This year, YCIAS has added several new grants that focus on the Middle East, Central Asia, Greece and its neighboring countries, and Latin America, Portugal and Spain.

New Fellowships: New funding at YCIAS provides support for undergraduates to pursue studies in the Middle East or the Central Asian countries of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan; for graduate and undergraduate students to pursue projects on Greece or Greece and its neighbors; and for graduate students to pursue projects on Latin America, Portugal and Spain.

YCIAS Dissertation Research Grants: For research outside the U.S. on international relations, history or the social sciences. Awards of $2,000-$10,000. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22.

YCIAS Pre-Dissertation (Mini) Grants: For pre-doctoral dissertation research generally outside the U.S. addressing international relations, history or the social sciences. Awards of $500-$3,500. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22.

Coca-Cola World Fund at Yale: Summer travel grants for projects at the intersection of at least two of the following fields: international law, international business or management, and international affairs and public policy. Awards of $500-$3,000. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, March 1.

European Union Studies Program Awards: For graduate and undergraduate students whose work focuses on the European Union or European integration. Grants of up to $3,000. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, March 1.

Fox International Fellowship Program: Supports research exchanges between Yale and the Free University of Berlin, Moscow State University, Cambridge University, Tokyo University, Fudan University in Shanghai, PRC, Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris and El Colegio de Mexico. Fox Fellowships are available to graduate and professional school students, as well as graduating Yale College seniors, conducting research on topics related to economics, political science, international relations, law, business and finance, or contemporary history. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, March 22.

Globalization and Self-Determination Project Grants: Pre-dissertation grants for summer research and dissertation grants for projects focusing on the future of the nation-state in the global economy, the activities of international financial institutions, or the relationships between globalization and economic and/or political decentralization. Pre-dissertation awards of $500-$3,500 and dissertation awards of $2,000-$10,000. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, March 1.

Georg Walter Leitner Program in International Political Economy Grants: For undergraduate, graduate and professional students whose work focuses on international or comparative political economy. Awards of $500-$3,000. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, March 1.

Richard U. Light Fellowship Program: For the study of Chinese, Korean or Japanese languages at selected sites in East Asia. Available to all registered Yale students. Fellowships provide full funding for a single term, a full year, a summer program, or a combination of these. Preference is given for the academic year or terms of study longer than summer. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, Jan. 25.

Henry Hart Rice Foreign Residence Fellowships: For individual study and research in the humanities and social sciences for 9-12 months while in residence in a foreign country that is experiencing strained relations with the United States. Awards of up to $12,000. Deadline: 4 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4.

Tristan Perlroth Prizes: Awarded to undergraduates for summer travel outside the United States to enhance understanding of foreign culture and/or international relations. Priority is given to students proficient in a foreign language, residents of Calhoun College, and international studies majors. Awards up to $4,000. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, March 1.

Stavros S. Niarchos Language Study Fellowships: The Hellenic Studies Program of the European Studies Council sponsors modern Greek language study fellowships in approved programs at institutions in Greece for a summer and semester combination or for a full year. All students are eligible to apply. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, March 1.

Rustgi Fellowships: For research or internships in South Asia for undergraduates and graduate and professional students in all disciplines. Research in India is preferred, but research in another South Asian country is also possible. Awards of $2,000-$2,500. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, March 1.

Bhatt Fellowships and Share and Care Foundation Fellowships: For research or internships in South Asia for undergraduates and graduate and professional students in all disciplines. Preference will be given to proposals that involve working with organizations that are trying to make social changes by education, empowerment or training, such as SEWA, Lok Bharati and Shrujan. Awards of up to $1,500. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, March 1.

Charles Kao Fund Grants: For summer research in East and Southeast Asia. Research should focus on the impact of technology transfer processes between Asia and the West, and social, cultural and political transformations in these regions. Grant requests of up to $5,000 to support field research, summer internships or other creative projects in Asia will be entertained. Priority will be given to students with demonstrated long-term academic commitment to East or Southeast Asia, or who need substantial first-hand exposure to Asia to complete a course of academic study. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22.

The Les Aspin '60 International Public Service Fellowships: For Yale College undergraduates in summer internships related to the study of national security and international affairs, in the public or non-profit private sector. The internships may be with a U.S. government agency, or a non-profit corporation or non-governmental organization. Grants are awarded to juniors or seniors with preference given to students in the international studies major. Awards up to $2,500. Deadline: 4 p.m., Friday, March 1.
