Yale PREP to boost number of minorities in biomedicine
The Graduate School's Office for Diversity & Equal Opportunity (ODEO) has developed a new research training initiative aimed at increasing the number of underrepresented minority students entering biomedical science graduate programs.
Yale is one of only eight sites in the country to receive a grant from the National Institute for General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) for this project.
With $1.9 million in funding over five years, the Yale Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (Yale PREP) will focus on addressing the academic and research training needs of underrepresented minority college graduates who have demonstrated a high level of motivation and commitment to pursuing Ph.D. training in the biomedical and/or behavioral sciences. The principal investigator on the grant is Liza Cariaga-Lo, assistant dean and director of ODEO.
The NIGMS grant will bring 10 post-baccalaureate minority students to Yale each year as Yale PREP Scholars, says Cariaga-Lo. "They will engage in research under the guidance of Yale faculty mentors, take graduate-level course work in their discipline and participate in seminars on health disparities research.
"For this program to succeed, we need committed Yale biomedical science faculty mentors who will be able to serve as role models for these promising young researchers," she adds.
"The goal of increasing the number of minority biomedical researchers is critical to the development of a cohort of scientists who will have responsibility for addressing minority health disparities in this country," notes Cariaga-Lo. "Yale PREP firmly builds on the Graduate School's commitment to building a diverse community of scholars."
Yale PREP applications can be obtained from ODEO by phoning (203) 432-0763 or by accessing www.yale.edu/graduateschool/services/odeo_prep.html. The deadline for submission is March 1 for matriculation in August 2002.
