Gina Kolata

Noted science reporter to visit as Poynter Fellow

Gina Kolata, an award-winning science reporter for The New York Times, will visit the University on Monday, Feb. 11, as a Poynter Fellow in Journalism.

Kolata will be the guest at a tea at 4 p.m. in the Davenport College master's house, 271 Park St. The event is free and open to the public.

Kolata became a science reporter for The New York Times in 1987, after having been a writer for Science magazine since 1974. She began her career in journalism in 1973 as a copy editor for Science. As a reporter of science and medicine stories for The New York Times, Kolata has written over 1,000 articles.

The journalist is the author of four books, "The Baby Doctors: Probing the Limits of Fetal Medicine," "Sex in America" (with E. Laumann, J. Gagnon and R. Michaels), "The Story of the Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918 and the Search for the Virus that Caused It" and, most recently, "Clone: The Road to Dolly and the Path Ahead," which explores the issue of human cloning.

Kolata earned her bachelor's degree in microbiology and her master's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Maryland. She studied molecular biology in a doctoral program for two years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology but left to pursue her writing career.

Kolata has won numerous awards from groups ranging from the American Heart Association to The American Medical Writers Association. Her work has also resulted in several Pulitzer Prize nominations.

The journalist has gained a reputation for being able to make complicated scientific, medical or mathematical news understandable to a general audience. "She loves knowledge," her editor, Toni Sciarra, is quoted as saying in a U.S. 1 Newspaper article. "She loves learning things, and she loves to explain what's she's learned. She loves to ask the questions everybody is thinking but not asking."

The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism at Yale was established by Nelson Poynter '27 M.A. It brings to campus journalists who have made significant contributions to their field.
