Event to explore innovative approaches to the law

The rights of same-sex couples, child prostitution, and race and election reform will be among the diverse topics discussed at this year's "Rebellious Lawyering" conference, being held Friday-Sunday, Feb. 15-17, at the Law School, 127 Wall St.

"Rebellious Lawyering" is an annual, student-run conference which brings together practitioners, law students and community activists/advocates from around the country to discuss innovative, progressive approaches to law and social change.

The event will open on Friday at 4 p.m. with a screening of "Corrections," a documentary about prison privatization, and a presentation by filmmaker Ashley Hunt. The day's events also include the opening address by Tim Wise, an anti-racist activist and essayist.

Saturday's program includes four sessions of concurrent events: 9-10:30 a.m. -- panels on "Freedom to Marry for Same-Sex Couples: Goals, Rights and Strategies" and "Globalization and Workers' Rights" and a workshop on "Community Economic Development"; 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. -- panels on "Children in Chains: Combating Child Prostitution and Exploitation," "Animal Rights and Human Law" and "Prisoners' Rights: Health Care, Disability Rights and Sexual Assault"; 2-3:30 p.m. -- panels on "Race and Electoral Reform," "Immigrants' Civil Rights: Before and After 9/11" and "Too Much Restraint? Domestic Violence and the Non-Enforcement of Restraining Orders," and a workshop on "Welfare Reform Activism"; and 3:45-5:15 p.m. -- panels on "Schooling Capital Punishment: Law Schools and the Fight Against the Death Penalty," "Access Denied: Keeping Reproductive Choice for Young Women Safe, Legal & Confidential" and "Advocacy Under Fire: Welfare Restrictions and the New Recession."

These events will be followed by the keynote address featuring Eva Jefferson Paterson of the Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights.

The conference will conclude on Sunday with two concurrent panels 10-11:30 a.m. -- "Environmental Justice" and "Taking on a Pandemic: Responses to the Global AIDS Crisis."

"Rebellious Lawyering" is open to Yale students free of charge; there is a $15 fee for all others. See www.law.yale.edu/reblaw/ for a complete schedule or to register.
