J. Crew and Sandra's open for business

Those who shop and dine in New Haven now have even more options to chose from, thanks to the recent opening of retailer J. Crew and Sandra's restaurant in Yale-owned properties.

J. Crew held a grand opening on Jan. 24 for its new store in New Haven's Broadway shopping district. The retailer is housed in a 6,240-square-foot space in a new building at 29 Broadway developed by University Properties as part of Yale's community investment program. The J. Crew in New Haven is one of only a handful of stores in the national chain that are located on street-level storefront rather than in a mall.

The store -- offering apparel, shoes, accessories and personal care products for all ages -- will be open until 9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and until 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Sandra's restaurant officially opened on Jan. 30 at 46 Whitney Ave., in a 2,200-square-foot space near the corner of Audubon Street. This is the second location in New Haven for the restaurant, which has as its motto "Soulful Eats, Peeps and Atmosphere." For the past 10 years, Sandra and Miguel Pittman owned and operated Sandra's at 634 Congress Ave., which grew from a take-out store founded in 1989.

Sandra's menu includes sandwiches and entrees featuring beef, pork chops, fish and chicken in a variety of styles -- from fried to "smothered" to barbecue -- as well as daily specials. It is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1-6 p.m. Sunday.
