In a ceremony on Feb. 7 in the Law School's Levinson Auditorium, Yale alumnus and Corporation member Barrington ("Danny") Parker was sworn in as a member of the federal Court of Appeals.

Parker, who earned both his B.A. (1965) and his LL.B. (1969) from Yale, was inducted to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by another Yale alumnus, Chief Judge John K. Walker Jr. (B.A. 1962). Parker is now the seventh judge on that court with a Yale degree. Two of his Yale Law School professors -- Guido Calabresi and Ralph K. Winter -- also took their oaths as federal judges in the Law School auditorium. Former Yale trustee and Law School graduate José A. Cabranes '65 J.D. also serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals, 2nd Circuit.

Parker was previously U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York, and held leadership positions on the Harlem School of Arts board and the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Parker was promoted to the appeals court by President George W. Bush. He was nominated to the bench at U.S. District Court in White Plains, New York, by former President Bill Clinton. At his swearing-in ceremony, President Richard C. Levin and others credited Parker's bipartisan appeal to his intellect and skills as a jurist.
