William J. Foltz, the H.J. Heinz Professor of African Studies and Political Science, will discuss David Halberstam's "War in a Time of Peace: Bush, Clinton, and the Generals" on Thursday, Feb. 21, as part of "Books Sandwiched In," a series of free noon-hour book discussions sponsored by the Friends of the New Haven Free Public Library. The discussion will take place 12:10-12:50 p.m. at the United Church on the Green, corner of Temple and Elm streets. Those who attend are invited to bring a lunch; coffee, tea and cookies will be available for purchase in the basement of the church 11:20 a.m.-12:10 p.m.
Dr. John M. Leventhal, professor of pediatrics and at the Child Study Center, received the 2001 Clifford W. Beers Recognition Award. Leventhal was honored for his "years of dedication and tireless efforts to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of children" in the Greater New Haven area and throughout Connecticut. The award was presented at the Clifford Beers Clinic's 88th Anniversary Gala/Silent Auction on Nov. 3. Previous award recipients include Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, Representative Rosa L. DeLauro and Dr. James Comer. Leventhal was also recently named editor-in-chief of "Child Abuse and Neglect: The International Journal."
Robert Farris Thompson, the Colonel John Trumbull Professor of the History of Art and master of Timothy Dwight College, explored the principles of motion and African art in a presentation titled "The Greatest Piece of Cultural Machinery on Earth" on Jan. 11 at the Seattle Art Museum in Seattle, Washington.
President Richard C. Levin announced the appointment of Wai Chee Dimock, professor of English and American studies, as acting director of the Division of the Humanities for the 2001-2002 spring semester.
