to visit as Poynter Fellow
World-renowned author and journalist Thomas L. Friedman will speak on campus on Thursday, Feb. 21, as the next Poynter Fellow in Journalism.
Friedman will be the guest at a tea at 4 p.m. in the Davenport College master's house, 271 Park St. The event is free and open to the public.
Friedman joined The New York Times in 1981 as a financial reporter specializing in OPEC and oil-related news. He later served as Beirut bureau chief, Israel bureau chief, Washington chief diplomatic correspondent, chief White House correspondent and chief economics correspondent. In 1995 he was appointed foreign affairs columnist on the paper's op-ed page.
A two-time Pulitzer Prize winner for his coverage of the Middle East, Friedman has traveled extensively reporting the end of the cold war, U.S. domestic politics and foreign policy, and international economics. His foreign affairs column, which appears twice a week in The New York Times, is syndicated to 700 other newspapers worldwide.
The journalist is the author of "From Beirut to Jerusalem," which won the National Book Award for non-fiction and the Overseas Press Club Award for the best book on foreign policy in 1989, and was on The New York Times best-seller list for almost a year. The book has been published in 14 languages, including Chinese and Japanese, and is used as a basic textbook in many high schools and universities.
Friedman also wrote "The Lexus and the Olive Tree," one of the best selling business books in 1999 and the winner of the 2000 Overseas Press Club Award, and penned the text accompanying Micha Bar-Am's book "Israel: A Photobiography." He appears regularly on Washington Week in Review and other current affairs programs.
Friedman graduated summa cum laude from Brandeis University with a degree in Mediterranean studies and received a master's degree in modern Middle East studies from Oxford. He has served as a visiting professor at Harvard and has been awarded honorary degrees from several universities.
In addition to the master's tea, the journalist will speak in the Yale School of Management's Leaders Forum Program 11:45 a.m.-12:50 p.m. in the General Motors Room of Horchow Hall, 55 Hillhouse Ave. Members of the Yale community are invited to attend.
