Conference and festival will
explore Southeast Asia

"Generations: Continuity and Conflict in Southeast Asia," a combination academic conference and cultural celebration, will take place on campus Friday-Sunday, March 1-3.

Talks, performances and an opportunity to sample Southeast Asian cuisine will highlight the weekend event, which is sponsored by the Council on Southeast Asian Studies and its host organization, the Yale Center for International and Area Studies; the Graduate School and its McDougal Center; and the Sudler Fund.

The academic portion of the weekend will focus on the history and future of Southeast Asian (SEA) studies, as well as the region's "diverse contemporary challenges and historical legacies," according to the organizers of the event.

There will be two keynote speakers: Harold C. Conklin, the Crosby Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, will discuss "The History of SEA Studies, with Particular Reference to the Role of Yale University" at 9:30 a.m. on March 1; and Juree Vichit-Vadakan, chair of the Center for Philanthropy and Civil Society, National Institute of Development Administration in Bangkok, Thailand, will speak on "Southeast Asia: Growing Pains of Transition or Resurgence of Involution?" at 9 a.m. on March 2.

There will also be a series of panel discussions on topics ranging from peace-building in Cambodia and East Timor to Philippine police and the problem of legitimacy, to the politics of sexual coercion in Indonesia, and more. The conference talks will take place in Rm. 119 of the Hall of Graduate Studies, 320 York St. (See the complete schedule at www.yale.edu/seas/02conf.htm.)

Other highlights of the weekend will include:

* A cultural festival featuring an opportunity to sample food, visual art, crafts, dress, music and dance from Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Burma. This event will be held 8-11 p.m. on March 1 in the Silliman College dining hall, 505 College St.

* A cultural show featuring performances by the Folklorico Filipino Dance Group, the Wesleyan Indonesian Gamelan Dance Troupe and the NYC Thai Community Dance Group. This will take place at 8 p.m. on March 2 in the Branford College dining hall, 74 High St.

* A performance of playwright Ratna Sarumpaet's work "Marsinah Accuses" by Tikka Sears, with sound direction by ethnomusicologist Franki Raden. The play describes the life and death of Marsinah, a worker in a watch factory in East Java, Indonesia, who was murdered in 1993 for her role in organizing a strike to demand better working conditions. The play was banned in Indonesia and Sarumpaet was held as a prisoner of conscience by the Suharto regime. The play will be presented at 3:15 p.m. on March 2 in the auditorium of Sterling Memorial Library, 120 High St. A special panel on the arts will follow at a location to be announced.

The "Generations" conference is free for all current Yale students and faculty. A registration form is available at www.yale.edu/seas/02conf.htm. Students can register in person until 9 a.m. on Friday; after that time, students are welcome to attend talks but meal registrations will be closed.
