Liman colloquium will explore the challenges
related to practice of public interest law

"Public Interest: Power and Purposes" is the theme of the fifth anniversary Arthur Liman Public Interest Law Colloquium, which will be held on Friday, March 8, at the Law School, 127 Wall St.

By definition, public interest law concerns the representation of individuals and groups who lack equal access to the legal system because of some disadvantage or disenfranchisement -- be it economic, environmental, societal or otherwise.

The colloquium will focus on issues related to the practice of public interest law. Topics to be discussed include "Understanding the Challenges of Public Interest Law Today," "Becoming and Staying a Public Interest Lawyer," "Imbedding Public Interest in Private Practice" and "Multiplying the Modes of Public Interest Practice."

The speakers include an array of scholars, lawyers and leaders of foundations and organizations that work to encourage and increase public interest practices. The latter include representatives from the Alliance for Justice, Texas Rural Legal Aid, the Michigan Poverty Law Program, the Capital Area Immigrants' Rights Coalition, the Pro Bono Institute and Lawyers for Children America.

The event will begin with registration at 7:45 a.m. and conclude at 5:30 p.m. Highlights will include:

* Welcoming remarks by Anthony Kronman, dean of the Law School; Judith Resnik, the Arthur Liman Professor of Law; Deborah Cantrell, director of the Law School's Liman Program; and Lewis Liman of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering;

* A lunch-discussion on the theme "Delivery of Legal Services Globally," with Richard Abel of the University of California at Los Angeles School of Law and Jennifer Rasmussen of the International Human Rights Law Group;

* Concurrent working groups on topics ranging from community organizing to human rights, funding and financing public interest practices, "The Public Relation of Public Interest Lawyering," and more.

* A concluding talk titled "Reflections for the Future" by Martha W. Barnett of Holland & Knight, president of the American Bar Association in 2000-2001.

There is no admission fee to attend the colloquium, but advanced registration is required. For information, call Deborah Cantrell at (203) 432-2230 or Anna Horning at (203) 432-7740.
