Los Angeles bishop to serve as interim dean of Berkeley Divinity School
The Right Reverend Frederick H. Borsch, retired bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, will serve as interim dean of the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale and associate dean of the Yale Divinity School beginning March 1.
In announcing the appointment, Chris Sonne, chair of the Berkeley board of trustees, said: "I am thrilled that Bishop Fred Borsch has agreed to serve as interim dean. He brings extraordinary qualifications as a prominent Episcopal Church leader, scholar, administrator and pastor. I can think of no person better equipped to lead Berkeley during this time of transition."
The Reverend Rebecca Chopp, dean of Yale Divinity School, added: "I am delighted to welcome Bishop Borsch as interim dean of Berkeley and associate dean at Yale Divinity School. Bishop Borsch brings wonderful pastoral skills, strong links to the Episcopal Church and connections to other denominations, expertise in the world of theological education and a great commitment to the education of leaders for the church. I look forward to working closely with him."
Borsch received his undergraduate education at Princeton University and graduate education at the University of Oxford (B.A., M.A.), the General Theological Seminary (S.T.B.) and the University of Birmingham (Ph.D.). A
Long active in the life of the Anglican Communion, Borsch most recently chaired one of the four major sections at the 1998 Lambeth Conference of Anglican bishops. Archbishop Desmond Tutu recently said of him, "What I certainly know is that you have some special ingredient that affects the chemistry between people. You have a formidable intellect, and yet you can communicate some of the most abstruse things and make people wonder why they never thought to express them quite that way."
Borsch has written extensively on contemporary issues in theological education and the ministry. He is the author or editor of 16 books and numerous articles, including "The Son of Man in Myth and History," "Introducing the Lessons of the Church Year: A Guide for Lay Readers and Congregations," "Jesus: The Human Life of God" and "Christian Discipleship and Sexuality."
A member of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature, Borsch served as chair of the Theology Committee of the House of Bishops from 1988 to 2000. He cofounded the Los Angeles Interfaith Environmental Council and has held numerous leadership positions within local, national and international charities and organizations.
