The troupe marked the occasion with vocal and instrumental music rooted in Korea's traditional rural folk culture. Known as Poongmool drumming, the music is usually performed while standing and is often used in parades.

Commemorating the Birth of a Nation

On March 1, 1919, a group of Korean leaders launched a campaign to end the nation's occupation by Japan. Although
that movement was quickly crushed, it set the tone for the nation's successful bid for independence 26 years later.

On March 1 of this year, members of Unity: The Korean Drum Troupe at Yale and Hanppuri: The Korean Students
at Yale gathered on Cross Campus to celebrate the 83rd anniversary of the March First Independence Movement.

Freshmen Hye-Jin Kim (left) and
Kim Won were dressed in garments
drawn from Korea's royal traditions
and its folk culture, respectively.

Juniors Brian Han (left) and
Jin-Woo Chung demonstrated
their national pride by wrapping
themselves in the Korean flag.

The troupe concluded its celebration by joining in a circle and chanting in Korean: "Let's find our culture, learn about our history."
