Roosevelt L. Thompson Prize

Two members of the Yale College Class of 2002 who were active in the Yale and New Haven communities were awarded the Roosevelt L. Thompson Prize during Senior Class Day ceremonies.

The Thompson Prize is given to members of the senior class for commitment to and capacity for public service. This year's winners were:

Jennifer Nou of Calhoun College, a double major in economics and politics, who comes from Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Nou was president of the Yale chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and former vice president of the Yale Mock Trial Association. She received a Harry S. Truman Scholarship in her junior year and won the prestigious Marshall Scholarship to study at Oxford University next year. Nou also won one of the top scholastic awards, the Arthur Twining Hadley Prize, at the Class Day ceremony. (See page 10-A).

Shayna Strom of Davenport College, a former co-coordinator of the student cabinet and member of the board of directors at Dwight Hall, a student-run umbrella organization for volunteer activities at Yale. She founded Yale's Ad-hoc Poverty Policy Organization and was involved in Stand Up and Vote! She is also an accomplished flutist. As the recipient of a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship, Strom will study next year at Oxford University. She is from Penn Valley, Pennsylvania, and majored in ethics, politics and economics.

Judith B. Krauss, chair of the Council of Masters Committee on Awards as well as master of Silliman College and professor of nursing, presented the awards at the May 26 ceremony.

Citations for this year's winners follow.

Jennifer Nou

A strong advocate for the rights of women, she served as a Rossborough Fellow in Residence at the Yale Women's Center, where she founded and led EndDV (End Domestic Violence), an umbrella organization that has centralized and made accessible a range of previously fragmented services improving opportunities for victims and providing volunteer avenues for Yale students. It is but one example of Jennifer's extraordinary commitment to public service that has dazzled and amazed all who have followed her work.

Shayna Strom

Her concern for diversity, issues of social justice and urban renewal has characterized her leadership in Dwight Hall. Through the Urban Fellows Program, she worked with ECCO to help New Haven residents rebuild impoverished neighborhoods. Her work as an organizer of the Ward 7 Community Investment Group and with a variety of New Haven commissions has addressed the plight of children and families living in poverty. A model of moral leadership in public service, she is admired for her great human warmth, commitment to fairness and compassion for all people.
